Embrace the Canadian Experiences.
If you're visiting Canada from overseas and you find yourself in Revelstoke, you'll likely want to try some stereotypical Canadian things. Here in Revy, we have managed to hold and strengthen our identity as an authentic mountain town. Visitors can walk uncrowded streets, eat in one-of-a-kind, locally-owned restaurants and bars, and mingle with locals at events and everyday occurrences. Visiting Revelstoke is a true Canadian cultural experience with stereotypes naturally included in its authenticity.
Canadian stereotypes may be some of the more humorous, well-known, and relatable generalizations that exist. From watching hockey 24/7 to guzzling Tim Horton’s coffee, sleeping in ice caves, slinging axes, adorning flannel, apologizing profusely, and eating poutine, Canadians are painted with a wide, rugged, northern, goofy brush.
We don’t try to be stereotypical, we just are sometimes. So here it is. Your guide to the ultimate Canadian experience, Revelstoke style.
Local hockey games.
Whether you classify yourself as a sports fan or not, this activity is serious fun for everyone.
We would argue that Revelstoke not only lives up to Canada’s national stereotype of hockey love, it surpasses it. The games are full of excited, engaged, boisterous fans. Just try to cheer louder than the person next to you. Just try!
P.S. The poutine at the Revelstoke Forum may be the best in town!
Brap.
Snowmobiling is one of Revelstoke’s biggest attractions and activities. Visitors come from all over the world to ride our extensive, impressive mountain landscapes.
We are also lucky to have the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club, one of Canada’s oldest and biggest clubs. Their website offers grooming and weather reports, important announcements, and everything you need to know about Revelstoke’s snowmobile scene.
If you are looking to get your first taste of sledding or are curious about Revelstoke’s surrounding terrain, be sure to check out the different snowmobile rentals and Great Canadian Tours for trail ride tours and more!
Canoeing.
Home to the Great Lakes, endless rivers, and one of the most abundant freshwater resources in the world, it's no wonder the canoe was preferred by the Indigenous Peoples of Canada.
The Sinixt people, also known as the Arrow Lakes tribe, have lived in harmony with the Columbia River and its tributaries since time immemorial. They traveled the river in canoes, hunted caribou, fished, and gathered wild plants and medicine. Learn more about the stories of the nations who travelled along the Columbia River and how the damming of the river had a devastating impact on many lives.
Powder.
Really we don't need to say much more except the Canadian ski experience in Revelstoke is unlike any you've experienced before. Our location in the inland temperate rainforest allows us to experience deep, deep powder that will have you feeling like you're on cloud 9 - but with an exceptional leg burn.
French Culinary Roots.
As much as we'd like to recommend a double-double from Timmy's, we think there's a superior option here in Revy.
If you're visiting from overseas, you'll notice pretty quickly that everything is in both English and French! Make sure to stop at La Baguette, a local French Canadian bakery. Inspired by memories of travels in France as well as their childhoods in the province of Quebec and family backgrounds of organic farming, the owners of the bakery started by offering artisanal sourdough bread, viennoiseries, French desserts, gourmet sandwiches, handcrafted gelatos, as well as fine cheeses and deli specialty items.
Don't miss their baguettes, croissants, and poutine!
Canadian Attire.
Purchase a flannel! It doesn’t have to be rough, stained with tree sap, and have its sleeves torn off to display the muscular arms of a lumberjack. Plaid is a multi-purpose, multi-functional clothing item worn by many different people in many different settings.
Going to dinner? Dressed up plaid. Going skiing? Active plaid. Going to the bar? Laid-back plaid. Drinking wine with your girlfriends? Casual plaid. Job interview? Professional plaid. Working outside? Insulated plaid.
Drink a Caesar, Eat a Poutine.
Have you ever heard of “Canadian cuisine”??
Canada doesn’t have a national menu built and perfected over time. Our meals are an eclectic mix of different cultural influences. That being said, there are two items associated solely with Canada that are must tries while you’re here.
Every caesar and poutine carries their own, distinct identity. They can be consumed together or at different times. They contain the same basic ingredients but have been interpreted differently across the country. Check out the different bars and restaurants that are available here.
A lesson in history.
Embark on a classic Canadian experience by visiting the local museums in Revelstoke, where you can immerse yourself in the city's storied past. Revelstoke's history is deeply intertwined with iconic Canadian narratives, making it a quintessential exploration for those seeking a deeper connection to all things Canadian.
