Top National Parks Activities in Spring.
In spring, many of our national park trails are snowbound (the more elevation gain the trail or the higher the trail head starts, the later in the season it is usually accessed).
Between May and June, enjoying our national parks mean checking out valley bottom and below treeline trails. This is the perfect time to experience our temperate rainforest, waterfalls, and accessible viewpoints.
Here are some great ideas for what to do with your FREE national park day pass as the trails become snow-free:
Visit the Historic Nels Nelsen Ski Jump.
800M RETURN | MOUNT REVELSTOKE NATIONAL PARK | 135M ELEVATION | STEEP NATURAL TRAIL
You can step into "Nels' Knickers" in an interactive art piece erected on the site of the historic ski jumps.
In early spring, your main access point it from the Nels Nelsen parking area. This trailhead will provide you with a steep, heartpumping 45 min workout as you zig and zag up to the top.
As the parkway opens, at km 4, there is opportunity to park and take the gentle sloping 15 min trail to the top of the former ski jump.
Hike the Inspiration Woods Trail.
2.5 KM ROUND TRIP | MOUNT REVELSTOKE NATIONAL PARK | GENTLE TRAIL WITH SHORT, STEEP SECTIONS
In lower Mount Revelstoke National Park, the Inspiration Woods Trail lives up to its name, offering a magical walk through the cedar-hemlock rainforest with carpets of moss, ferns, and lichen.
Due to its low elevation, Inspiration Woods is a popular hike both early (April-May) and late (October-November) in the season. Before the Meadows in the Sky Parkway opens on the May long weekend, parking is available at the Parkway welcome kiosk (adds 1 km round trip).
Admire the parkway views.
The lower section of the parkway generally opens around May long weekend.
The Meadows in the Sky Parkway opens gradually as the road becomes snow-free. The parkway offers 7 unique viewpoints of the surrounding valleys. These can be accessed by car, foot, or bike (if you’re up for a workout!).
Experience Bear Creek Falls Trail.
1 KM RETURN | 95M ELEVATION | NATURAL, STEEP TRAIL
The trailhead generally opens mid-May, although trail conditions may be variable.
Bear Creek Falls is normally the first snow-free trail in the area (mid-May), offering a short steep adventure to a secluded glacial waterfall. The 1km return trail begins on a downward slope, bring proper footwear because the hill climb back up to your vehicle may get your heart pumping!
Picnic at The Skunk Cabbage Day Use Area.
Listen to the roar of the Illecillewaet River in its spring flood while you eat lunch. The picnic area opens in late May or early June. The boardwalk itself is closed until further notice for maintenance.
*Giant Cedars Boardwalk in Mount Revelstoke National Park is closed due to significant damage from fallen trees. A re-opening date is projected for mid-summer 2024.
