The Revy Triker: Illecillewaet Greenbelt

Adaptive biking on Greenbelt trails.

Chris Miller is a passionate community member in Revelstoke who gets around town and the trails on his adaptive bike. We asked him to showcase some of his preferred routes around Revy. This one showcases the Illecilleawet Greenbelt trails, near downtown Revelstoke.

I’m glad to see your interest in the adaptive side of Tourism Revelstoke.

With a bit of insight, you'll see Revelstoke is ideal for adaptive activities. Located in the Columbia River Valley, the town is relatively flat—perfect for accessible travel.

I’ve called Revelstoke home for 20 years, moving here from Smithers for a four-month electrical job, only to get “Revelstuck.” I was an avid skier, snowmobiler, and mountain biker until a stroke in 2014 changed everything, leaving me with physical, visual, and audio challenges, including a lack of balance. Now, I roll. I cycle daily, covering 10 to 30 km, making biking not only my passion but my main way to get around town.

About The Trail.

Most commonly, because of their convenience being right outside my door, I ride the combination of the Greenbelt pathway and Illecillewaet River area trails. These trails contribute to my daily dose of mental health prescription.  We all need time spent in nature. The flat, paved pathway of the perimeter “River Trail” is maintained by the city year around. It is often used by walkers, joggers, and cyclists. If you only have a couple of hours to spend in Revelstoke, as a visitor counsellor at the Revelstoke Visitor Information Centre, I regularly advise our visitors to enjoy these pathways, which provide magnificent views in every direction and a superb relationship to Revelstoke’s geographical setting.

A Trail For All.

The Illecillewaet River trails, maintained year-round by the Illecillewaet Greenbelt Society, feature crushed gravel and hard-packed dirt—perfect for adaptive use and my trike. In winter, the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing, making them a popular spot for locals. You can access these trails from the ends of Campbell Ave., Centennial Park, or Kovach Park on the south side of town, all with accessible parking and washrooms. Centennial Park hosts the city’s main soccer and baseball fields and a riverside picnic area, while Kovach Park offers a playground, a world-class skate park, and green space. These trails are a gift for Revelstoke's residents and visitors alike.
