History

1965

The Birth of Heli-Skiing

Hans Gmoser, a pioneer in Canadian mountaineering, introduced the world to heli-skiing in the Bugaboos of British Columbia, sparking global interest. Although Gmoser’s Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) didn’t start in Revelstoke, the concept led to the eventual expansion of heli-skiing into Revelstoke’s surrounding mountains.

1978

Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) Expands to Revelstoke

CMH, Gmoser’s heli-skiing company, established operations in Revelstoke, making use of the Selkirk and Monashee mountain ranges. With access to some of the region’s best powder and expansive terrain, CMH helped put Revelstoke on the map as a top heli-skiing destination.

1978

Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing Founded

Founded the same year, Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing became one of the earliest operators in the region. Based in Revelstoke, Selkirk Tangiers developed a reputation for its vast tenure in the Selkirk and Monashee mountains, offering deep powder, untouched terrain, and a wide variety of heli-skiing experiences. Their partnership with Revelstoke Mountain Resort, formed after the resort’s opening, cemented Selkirk Tangiers as a leading operator in the region.

2003

Mica Heli-Skiing Established

Mica Heli-Skiing launched just north of Revelstoke, offering boutique heli-skiing experiences in the remote Cariboo and Rocky Mountains. With limited guest capacity and small-group packages, Mica Heli-Skiing became known for its exclusive access to pristine powder and unique lodge experiences. Its focus on personalized service and high-alpine terrain furthered Revelstoke’s reputation as a heli-skiing hub.

2008

Eagle Pass Heliskiing Launched

Eagle Pass Heliskiing began operations south of Revelstoke in 2008, specializing in small-group, customized heli-ski experiences. Eagle Pass quickly gained a loyal following for its intimate approach, expert guides, and access to the challenging, powder-rich terrain of the Monashee Mountains. The company’s smaller groups allow for a highly personalized experience, drawing skiers seeking high-quality, adrenaline-fueled heli-skiing.

2023

Frequently Asked Questions

How strong of a rider do I need to be?

It is recommended that skiers and boarders be intermediate to advanced ski resort riders. Having experienced deep powder is considered an asset as Revelstoke is known for legendary deep days. Fitness is another aspect that will make the consecutive days out more enjoyable.

When is the best time to go heli-skiing?

Early-season skiing begins in December. Tree skiing is common in December, January, and February when winter storms bring deep conditions and managing terrain is important. Late February and March bring more spring-like conditions, longer days, and more access to alpine bowls and glacier skiing. April brings plenty of great snow and blue bird days in the high alpine.
