Gravel Biking

Offroad Odyssey.

An abundance of dirt and gravel roads wind through picturesque valleys, rainforests, and rolling hills. Get ready to tackle gravel climbs, navigate technical descents, and immerse yourself in the raw beauty of the great outdoors.

Thanks to Revelstoke's resource industries, there is a large network of forest service roads that are perfect for gravel cyclists. These roads are ACTIVE roads, meaning that you should expect to encounter heavy truck traffic. Using a two-way radio is necessary while recreating on these roads.

Safety

To avoid being crushed by a logging truck or a low-bed truck hauling heavy machinery equipment, please stick to the correct side of the road and carry a two-way radio (and use it). This prepares both the operator to slow down in advance and allows you to pull out in a safe area. These trucks are often carrying heavy loads and cannot stop instantaneously.

Seasons

Spring, Fall, Summer

Mt. Mcpherson

Known for its exceptional mountain biking, Mount Macpherson also offers an extensive network of gravel trails. Explore the serene forests, meandering rivers, and rolling hills while enjoying a mix of gravel and dirt paths which are used primarily by the Revelstoke Nordic Centre in the winter.

The Flats

"The Flats" was once a large stretch of farmland south of Revelstoke that was flooded when the construction of the dam took place in the 60s. While the area experiences winter snow and summer flooding, spring and fall unveil the old roads that connect the valley, making it a great spot for scenic, mellow gravel riding.

Start at Kovach Park and follow the dirt roads or smaller trails as far south as 9 Mile.

Alkokolex & Crawford FSRs

Up To 83km Return Trip

Follow Airport Way south from Revelstoke and continue almost until the end of the pavement. Take a left turn onto the Akolkolux FSR until you reach kilometre 12.5. Continue east, following the Alkokolex River for a moderate ride or continue on to the Sproat Mountain trailhead (41km) for views of the Gold Range across the lake.

**The Backroad Mapbook or other mapping tools are recommended due to the numerous branch roads and the tendency of the directional signage to go missing. This is an active industrial road - using a two-way radio with resource road channels is necessary.

Downie FSR

Up To 82km Round Trip

Amongst all the FSRs on Highway 23N, the best is Downie Creek FSR. Starting about 65km north of Highway 1, the road curves into the Selkirk Mountains, with towering rock walls and glaciated peaks on either side. There is minimal climbing and the views get better the farther you go. Optional: Sorcerer FSR at 15km to explore another drainage..
