Summer in Revelstoke is a special time. The flowers are out, bikes are as common as cars and there’s music every night of the week.
The seasonal event, Summer Street Fest, is Revelstoke’s musical community celebration of summertime, something that brings locals, new residents and tourists together.
For 65 days in Revelstoke, every night, rain or shine, music fills the Grizzly Plaza in downtown Revelstoke and the hearts of those within it.
From late June to late August locals and tourists alike flock to the square, pull up a seat and enjoy a variety of tunes. One night could be country (check out Joanne Stacey on July 9), another night, folk (see John Jenkins on July 7).
Families gather, friends laugh and tourists get a taste of what it’s like to live in Revelstoke. Local folk musician Denis Severino will play on July 8 and he says it’s a great event attracts everybody.
“It’s early enough for families to catch the action,” he says. “It’s nice to play as a musician because it’s pretty casual. It can serve as as social gathering for your friends, and it’s great to have kids there while playing.”
The best nights are the ones after a typical hot summer’s day. As the band sets up, people mill around lazily. They catch up on news and enjoy an easy afternoon having nowhere else to be. The gelato stand by the Roxy Theatre does a roaring trade as adults, kids and dogs get their share of the cold dessert.
Some make an event of it all, scooping up reservations at Chubby Funsters’ outdoor patio, enjoying a meal while getting front row seats to the show of the night.
As the evening lengthens a cool breeze relieves the day of its heat while the sky darkens slowly behind the overlooking Mount Revelstoke.
As the last song is heard, the last clap received, the square then empties until the following daybreak.
