Winter in powtown Revelstoke

Local tips: road conditions, weather and vehicle safety.

We get a lot of snow here throughout the winter months. While that can sometimes cause road closures and delays, always remember the upside… there will be pow turns for days once you arrive!

  • Drive BC

This is the best way to continuously stay up to date on planned and unplanned highway events. Their website and phone app offer reliable, real-time and clear information for all of BC’s major highways. Pro Tip  Check DriveBC as you pass through each town. If there is a spontaneous closure along your route, you will have the opportunity to explore a new town while you wait it out. It’s better than being stuck on the highway. Trust us.

  • Vehicle Safety

When booking your vehicle, ensure that it has both winter tires and four wheel drive. Winter tires are mandatory in BC from October 1 until April 30. 4WD is not legally required but it does provide you with a higher level of safety. Pro Tip Consider purchasing roadside assistance – it is one of the only reliable ways to ensure rental companies will help you if you become stuck or stranded on the road.

  • Flexibility

Remain flexible with your plans, know your accommodation’s cancellation policies and ensure you are comfortable driving through the mountains in winter conditions. Pro Tip Bring extra food, water and warm clothes (gloves, hats, boots and a jacket) in your car. If you do get stuck along your route, you will remain happy, fed, quenched and warm while you wait for the roads to open or assistance to arrive.
