alpine hiking amongst wildflowers

Bear Behaviour & Biology - Glacier National Park

Balu Pass trail takes you through alpine meadows, avalanche paths, and prime habitat for grizzly bears.

Each year, between July 15 and September 30, hikers must organise in groups of 4 or more to visit the area. This guided hike reveals the secret world of bear signs.

Look for bear trails, scat and tracks and learn to travel safely in bear country. There’s no better place for this than Balu Pass trail, named after the Indian word “baloo”, meaning bear.

Moderately challenging, steep sections, 12.8 km return.
